Tooth Extractions for Children
A tooth extraction involves gently removing a tooth from its socket in the jaw bone. At Treehouse Dental Care, our dentists recommend extractions for children only when less invasive treatments wouldn't be effective or when keeping the tooth could harm their overall oral health.
There are several reasons your child might need a tooth pulled. This could be due to severe tooth decay that can’t be fixed with a filling or crown, damage from an injury, or advanced gum disease affecting the tooth’s stability.
Sometimes, extractions are necessary to make room for adult teeth as part of orthodontic treatment, or to prepare their mouth for other dental procedures.
We know that getting a tooth pulled can be a scary experience for kids. When your child visits us, our team will always prioritize their comfort and safety, taking the time to carefully explain the process while providing reassurance every step of the way.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare
Once the tooth is extracted, it is important to stop the bleeding. Apply pressure to the area by having your child bite tightly on a piece of gauze for 15 - 30 minutes. If your child is too young, you will need to hold the gauze for the same length of time.
It is common for the extraction site to bleed on and off for several hours, however, further pressure will usually solve the problem. To help with healing on the first day, rinse your child’s mouth with warm salt water three to four times.
Tooth Extraction Healing Process
Your child may experience some slight discomfort or pain in the days following the extraction. We recommend Tylenol in the appropriate dose for your child.
Any sucking or use of straws should be avoided for the first day, and crunchy foods should be avoided for one to two days after the procedure. Have your child rinse with warm salt water regularly for the first few days after the extraction to help prevent infection. In most cases, it should take about a week for your child to heal post-extraction.
