Preventive Dental Services for Children

Checkups, Hygiene Cleaning & Preventive Care
In addition to regular brushing and flossing at home, our dentists recommend bringing your child in for a checkup and cleaning every six months. These routine visits help keep their teeth and gums healthy while also catching and preventing tooth decay early on.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps protect your child’s teeth by strengthening the enamel and reinforcing areas that may have started to weaken. It also inhibits the growth of bacteria that can cause tooth decay.
Sealants
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the surfaces of molars to help prevent cavities. These back teeth have deep grooves that tend to trap more food, and are harder to reach when brushing. Sealants create a smooth barrier over these surfaces, reducing the risk of decay and keeping your child's teeth healthier as they grow.
Infant Exams
Your baby’s first teeth are an exciting milestone worth celebrating! According to the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, children should see a dentist by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth coming in – whichever comes first. Since tooth decay can start as soon as baby teeth appear, early dental visits are key to keeping your child’s smile healthy and helping them build good oral care habits from the start.
Waiting too long for that first appointment can lead to problems like tooth aches, infections, and even issues with sleep, nutrition, and behaviour. These challenges can affect your child’s confidence, as well as their ability to speak and interact with others.
During your child's first visit, we will:
- Ensure everything in their mouth is developing normally.
- Educate you on how to maintain your child's healthy teeth.
- Discuss nutrition, pacifier use, or thumb sucking.
- Answer any questions that you may have.

Dental X-Rays
Dental X-rays are not just for looking for cavities. They can be used to help us diagnose and treat things that cannot be seen during a regular exam, such as erupting teeth or bone disease. They also help us plan orthodontic treatment.
The frequency of X-rays will be recommended based on your child’s individual oral health needs, as well as their stage of growth, since children’s teeth are more vulnerable to decay and develop quickly. At Treehouse Dental Care, we take every precaution to minimize your child’s exposure to radiation. With safeguards such as lead aprons and thyroid collars, their exposure will be extremely low.

At-Home Dental Education
While regular visits to the dentist are important for your child’s oral health, their smile won’t stay healthy for long without thorough, consistent at-home dental care. Even before teeth erupt in your child’s mouth, their gums should be gently washed each day.
Twice-daily brushing should begin as soon as the teeth break through the gums, although the teeth may initially be cleansed using water, rather than toothpaste. It’s usually safe to start using children’s toothpaste around the age of two, or whenever their dentist recommends it.
Your Child's Diet
Ensuring your child follows a healthy diet is essential for both their oral and overall well-being. There is no denying that sugar is a favourite for kids to consume. However, sugar is the main cause of dental decay when there is bacteria present.
That’s why it’s important to recognize all the different sources of sugar, not just obvious sweets. Even foods like bread can break down into sugar and contribute to dental issues.
